Annual and seasonal consumption statistics (2013)

Annual:
  • Canadians consumed 147.7 million kg (Mkg) of turkey in the year 2013.
  • Per Capita turkey consumption in 2013 was 4.2 kg.
  • An estimated 69.7 Mkg of turkey and turkey products were purchased at retail by Canadians in 2013.
  • Of that 69.7 Mkg, 52.2 Mkg of whole turkeys were purchased.
  • In 2013, Canadian households consumed a total of 8.4 million whole turkeys.
  • Annual sales of turkey parts and processed turkey products in Canadian supermarkets increased from 8.8 Mkg in 1993, to 17.4 Mkg in 2013.
Thanksgiving:
  • At Thanksgiving 2013, 2.9 million whole turkeys were purchased by Canadians, equal to 34% of all whole turkeys that were sold over the year.
  • 36% of all Canadian households (4.9 million) purchased turkey and turkey products for Thanksgiving 2013.
Christmas:
  • At Christmas 2013, 4.0 million whole turkeys were purchased by Canadians, equal to 48 % of all whole turkeys that were sold over the year.
  • 41% of Canadian households (5.6 million) purchased turkey and turkey products for Christmas 2013.
