At the same time the food choices of many Canadians are being influenced by the economic downturn, poultry is still a popular choice for families for a variety of reasons, including health and taste. Building on this idea, provincial turkey marketing boards across the country are looking to boost traditional and new turkey products beyond their present sales.
There has been significant media attention on supply management in recent months. Federal and Provincial Government leadership, however, have come out strongly in their support of supply management.
Turkey Farmers of Canada (TFC) has partnered with Food Banks Canada for the last three years, to provide turkeys to thousands of families in need across Canada. With an unprecedented number of Canadians indicating their use of food banks, reported in Food Banks Canada’s annual HungerCount survey, more Canadians than ever are relying on their local food bank to feed themselves and their families.
At the invitation of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food (AGRI), TFC Chair, Mark Davies, and Executive Director, Phil Boyd, appeared before the Committee on November 22nd with regard to the group’s study on Growing Forward 2.
(Mississauga, Ontario) – At their General Business Meeting in Toronto, yesterday, the Turkey Farmers of Canada (TFC) Board of Directors presented a cheque for $62,000 to Food Banks Canada’s Vice-Chair Brian Meagher, and Executive Director, Katharine Schmidt. The third annual donation of over $50,000 will assist thousands of Canadian families. The funds will be distributed in September to many rural food banks across Canada, targeted to those most in need. Those food banks selected will purchase whole turkeys or turkey parts for their community, for distribution at Thanksgiving.
Canada’s national poultry organizations welcome the strong commitment of the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, to ensuring that there is a solid network of agriculture research infrastructure across the country.
