Turkey Farmers Care

Not everyone is able to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas with a traditional turkey meal. There are 150,000 Canadians in rural communities relying on a food bank each month and especially during the holidays. Since Turkey Farmers of Canada believes that every food bank donation helps improve lives, we are proud to partner with Food Banks Canada for the eighth year in a row. Turkey Farmers of Canada is honoured to have this opportunity to give back to rural communities across the country so that people can enjoy a holiday turkey meal with family and friends, that otherwise may not happen.

In a similar spirit of giving back, Jelmer Wiersma, a turkey farmer in Saskatchewan and one of our directors at Turkey Farmers of Canada supports this program and started his own family initiative. Since 2013, he’s been donating turkeys to a local Saskatoon community. He said, “my mother used to volunteer at a soup kitchen and got wind of the fact that they needed more turkeys for the holidays”. While Jelmer’s mother organizes the orders and all logistics, he delivers frozen turkeys to two organizations. He said, “The Friendship Inn and The Lighthouse Supported Living are community support centres that do such good work in our area and have excellent hot meal programs, so we support them”. Jelmer plans to continue donating to these centres and believes, “if financially someone has the means to give, it’s important to do so, this is how I was raised and I continue to pass these values along to my family”. Jelmer and his mother are not alone in what they do; many Canadian farmers generously give back to their communities too.

Join our farmers this Thanksgiving by participating in our #TurkeyFarmersCare campaign between September 26 – October 10. Let’s help spread the word about hunger in our country and give even more Canadians a reason to be thankful.
